Bell Craft

Bell-making is an ancient Indian craft with enchanting origins. Traditionally used by farmers to identify their livestock, each bell is tuned to produce a distinctive chime. Creating music from lifeless metal, bell-making in India uses craftsmanship passed down through generations. Made from recycled tin and iron, artisans in the desert Kutch region manually cut and hammer the metal to hand-shape the bells, then coat them in powdered brass and copper before firing in kilns. Each rustic bell is then tuned to reveal a rich, unique sound like no other bell.

Upcycled Sari

Saris have been present in Indian culture and imagery for thousands of years. Hindu goddesses of beauty, knowledge and power are depicted draped in the colorful garments, and women throughout India wear saris for many occasions. Upcycling saris reincarnates these beautiful fabrics into eco-chic fashion accessories while empowering women artisans to build sustainable livelihoods and communities.

Bell Craft Artisans

Due to consecutive droughts over the years, cattle breeders no longer buy bells on a regular basis and the demand for traditional bell making was on the verge of dying. With the help of fair trade and mission-based organizations, at least 1,000 village artisans in the desert Kutch region are repositioning this art form and earning sustainable livelihoods by selling the bells internationally. Most artisans work from their homes on local or homemade furnaces.

Upcycled Sari Artisans

United through the guidance of our India team, small groups of women from urban slums in Rajasthan and Madhya Pradesh work in their homes to learn simple techniques to fashion jewelry and home décor with upcycled saris and other recycled materials. Because of the patriarchal culture, most of the women are confined to their homes with family responsibilities. The training and income provided by this craft empowers them financially and strengthens their confidence and support for their families and community.
