At Matr Boomie, we prioritize giving back to our wonderful community. Every few months our team dedicates a day to volunteering in Austin. Last week, we spent our Volunteer Day cleaning up our beloved Zilker Park.
Zilker Park is located in Central Austin, and serves as a connecting point for the city. The park sits alongside Lady Bird Lake, and includes a hike and bike trail as well as the summer hot-spot Barton Springs, a favorite summer destination for both locals and tourists.
Each year, Zilker Park hosts the Austin City Limits Music Festival. Hundreds of thousands of fans come out for two weekends to hear their favorite bands. While this event is a highlight of our city and provides a significant boost to the local economy, it also takes a toll on the park’s natural beauty. After the festival, Zilker Park often needs a little TLC. That’s where we come in. Our team set out on a mission to help clean up and restore the park.
We spent the afternoon walking the trail along the river, picking up as much trash as we could. This park belongs to our community, and we value taking care of it. We teamed up in groups of two and three for max efficiency, throwing away discarded food wrappers, cigarette butts, and any other rubbish that hadn’t made it to the bin. Our collective effort improved the space, making it more pleasant for both our residents and wildlife.
After several hours of hard, yet rewarding work, we celebrated our efforts with a relaxing kayak adventure on Lady Bird Lake. The lake is stunning year-round, but especially beautiful in the fall with changing leaves and tranquil water.
Park cleanup is a great way to spruce up a beloved space and give back to your city. It only requires a few pieces of equipment: trash bags, gloves, grabbers, and water for staying hydrated outdoors. We only have one planet and it’s important to take care of our environment. We are lucky to live near such a wonderful park that serves as an anchor for Austin. Together, we can ensure that Zilker Park, and our planet, remains a beautiful place for generations to come.
